Resources
Below are some of the books and websites that I recommend for learning about criticism of fundamentalist Christianity.
Websites
- TalkOrigins Archive – A wonderful resource for a scientific perspective on evolution, the age of the earth and other creation-related topics such as the plausibility of a global flood. I particularly recommend the Index to Creationist Claims and 29+ Evidences for Macroevolution.
- Skeptic's Annotated Bible – A line-by-line Bible commentary that notes the absurdities, evils and errors throughout Scripture. Since it seeks comprehensiveness, some points of criticism are weaker than others, but it's still a great starting point for research. The site also includes similarly thorough approaches to the Quran and the Book of Mormon.
- The Secular Web – A vast collection of essays from a variety atheist and skeptical thinkers—both historical and modern.
- Ebon Musings – A group of powerful essays by Adam Lee advocating atheism and criticizing Christianity on a variety of subjects.
- Iron Chariots and RationalWiki – Two great wikis, the former dedicated specifically to countering apologetics and the latter advocating rational thinking in general.
- QualiaSoup and Evid3nc3 – Two fantastic YouTube channels whose videos deliver polished and highly informative explanations of issues relating to Christianity and atheism.
Books
- 50 Reasons People Give for Believing in a God – A gentle response to common justifications for theism well-suited to Christians who might take offense to more aggressively critical viewpoints.
- Why Evolution Is True – An informative, easily understandable summary of the diverse and powerful evidence for evolution.
- Why I Became an Atheist – Ex-pastor John Loftus outlines his journey from devout Christianity to atheism, offering a broad but potent overview of everything that's wrong with the religion.
- The Christian Delusion – Don't be turned off by the provocative title. This anthology is packed with valuable criticism of everything from biblical cosmology to God's poor communication skills.
- Jesus, Interrupted – An in-depth look at the conflicting messages and forgeries in the Bible, as well as the surprisingly messy and human process by which the biblical canon was formed.
- Letter to a Christian Nation – A short yet passionate and persuasive plea to American Christians to recognize the great harm that religious fundamentalism does to the world.
